According to Coaches Colin Matthiesen and Jared Hubbell, it’s important to be on time and give your body time to warm up properly. The most intense part of the workouts is at the beginning. Trainings start with a warmup (5 minutes), and then typically progress into lifting (30-35 minutes)
The goals are for participants to:
- have fun
- get faster
- get more powerful
- move better
- be more resilient to injury
Suggested attire: comfortable t-shirt, athletic shorts or sweats, athletic shoes (nothing with an open toe or open heel). If you need assistance getting any of these items, please email Coach Matthiesen at cjmatthiesen@seattleschools.org.

Summer Training
Our staff offers optional summer training sessions to all current and incoming Ballard athletes, interested in trying out for the 2025-26 girls soccer season. While participation in summer training is optional, we strongly encourage all student-athletes interested in the program to attend sessions whenever possible. These training sessions will provide your athletes with a great chance to build their strength & fitness as we prepare for tryouts, all while building connections within the Ballard girls soccer community. All sessions will take place at BHS:
- Weight Training: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 8-9 a.m. (BHS Weight Room)
- Field Training: Mondays, 8-9:30 a.m. & Wednesdays, 3-4:30 p.m. (BHS Soccer Field)
- Fitness Sessions: Fridays, 8-9 a.m. (BHS Soccer Field)
Fall Tryouts
Tryouts for the 2025-26 girls soccer season will be held on: August 25, 26, 27 from 3-5 p.m. @ the BHS soccer field. We encourage families to plan any vacations prior to the start of tryouts to ensure full participation. As we get closer to tryouts, our staff will host a parent meeting to provide more details surrounding tryouts and what players and their families can expect out of the process.
How to Register
To ensure your student-athlete is ready for participation, please complete the following as soon as possible: Register your student for Girls Soccer for the 2025–26 school year via FinalForms and complete all forms, which include a parent-signed form, a student-signed form, a valid copy of your student-athlete’s physical, and ASB fees (note, the fee payment window is not open yet, so no action needed for summer activities; however, the ASB fee will need to be paid prior to the start of tryouts).
If your student is interested in participating in any Ballard girls soccer-related activities for the 2025–26 season—including summer sessions—they must be fully cleared through FinalForms before participating. Our coaching staff will closely monitor sign-ups and clearance statuses in FinalForms to ensure each student is cleared for participation.
If you have any questions about FinalForms, please contact Bethany Nielcen, the BHS Athletic Secretary at blnielcen@seattleschools.org. For any other questions or comments, feel free to reach out directly to Taryn Brandel via email at tebrandel@seattleschools.org.
