Consider a Donation To DonorsChoose & Beaver Beans Coffee Project

Ballard High School serves many students with many different needs. Ballard HS Special Education Teacher David Furman, who teaches students with intellectual disabilities, is reaching out to get support through DonorsChoose for his students with intellectual disabilities who spend part of their school day working on vocational skills to support them in obtaining supported employment and living as independently as possible after they graduate. We would like to expand this program with your help. Consider a donation today!

To support this learning, we operate a coffee shop – Beaver Beans where students learn to sell coffee cards, collect payment, label and organize materials, pull espresso using a professional espresso machine, ensure quality of their product, and delivery. In addition they are working on the fundamental life skills of task analysis, following a checklist, communication, fine and gross motor skills, and so much more.

Mr. Furman is looking to expand that program, but he needs our help. With the support of Ms. Chambers, our Librarian, he has put together a DonorsChoose to fund items that will help this program expand and for a limited time there is a 2x match to all donations.

Many adults with disabilities are employed in retail settings (e.g. a grocery store) completing tasks such as stocking, inventory scanning, unpacking, folding of clothing, etc. We are asking for the supplies to teach them those skills while in high school, so they leave our program with a robust set of job skills, life skills, AND a competitive resume.
