Youth Heart Screening on Jan. 8
Free of Cost Screening To Our Students
On January 8, 2025 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Ballard HS is able to host an EKG Youth Heart Screening Event that is free of cost to provide screenings for our students in our Gymnasium. As many of you know, this past summer we tragically lost a student from our school community due to a heart arrhythmia event. In honor of her memory, her friends and the Ballard HS administration sought out an organization called the Nick of Time Foundation.
The Nick of Time Foundation will be able to screen up to 500 students. As Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the leading cause of death in exercising or active youth on school campuses. Nick of Time Foundation, in partnership with the UW Center for Sports Cardiology, conducts EKG youth heart screenings for young adults. A simple EKG can identify certain serious heart conditions that cannot be detected by a stethoscope. Thank you for making your student’s heart health a priority and for being a part of our mission to save young lives from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).
Parents! To register your student for this event, please follow these steps:
- Make an appointment on Nick of Time: All participants must pre-register for an appointment.
- Fill out the heart screening permission and history form No one will be screened without the signed forms.
- Return completed forms. Forms can be returned to the Ballard HS Main Office or by email to: bhs.heartscreen@seattleschools.org
The NOFT Foundation was established after one of the founders 16-year-old nephew Nicky suffered a fatal SCA. Their hope is to find hidden problems before it’s too late and save another family from the devastation of losing a child. To date we’ve screened close to 30,000 student athletes in the Puget Sound, finding over 600 with potentially life-threatening problems.
If you want to learn more about what the Nick of Time Foundation EKG screen entails, please watch this video for more information.
Thank You BHS Volunteers!
The Nick of Time heart screening event hopes to screen over 500 students! To support all the medical volunteers, we will be providing coffee, breakfast and lunch.

What Happens at a Screening?
Heart Health Survey: This survey asks information to identify possible signs, symptoms, and/or family history of a heart condition and is reviewed by a medical professional. Privacy- Each participant’s confidentiality, privacy, and individual modest is respected throughout all aspects of the program and screening. Girls and boys are separated to separate screening areas and all girls will be screened by female health professionals. Additional privacy is available upon request.
EKG: A medical professional performs an EKG that analyzes the electrical signals of the heart. Small patches with a mild, latex-free adhesive will be placed on the chest, legs, and arms. Electrodes are attached to the patches and the heart’s electrical activity is recorded. The screening is completely painless and non-invasive (no needles or x-ray exposure). Doctor consult and screening results review- EKG results are reviewed on-site by medical professionals experienced in EKG youth heart screens. Some participants may also have a hearts-sounds physical or limited Echocardiogram (ultrasound) of their heart.
CPR and AED Training: Everyone who receives a screening will also receive hands-only instruction on CPR and AED machines.
Free of Cost
The Nick of Time Foundation is providing the EKG Youth Heart Screening at no cost or obligation. However, to help defer screening costs, and enable future community screening events, there is a suggested donation of $25. Donations are tax deductible and can be made at the time of registration, by cash or check to the P.O. Box 14178, Mill Creek, WA 98082 or online at Nick of Time.
