ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
COURSE OVERVIEW Grade 9

English Language Arts

9th grade students take Intro to Lit & Comp 9A/9B or Honors Intro to Lit & Comp 9A/9B. No application or
recommendation is required to select the Honors class. Honors and at-level students are in the same class.

Social Studies

9th grade students take World History 1 and 2, or Honors World History 1 and 2. No application orrecommendation is required to select the Honors class. Honors and at-level students are in the same class.

Math

Please consult with your current middle school math teacher and the BHS Math Course Progression Chart

Science

9th grade students take Biology. 9th grade students who are interested in the Biotech Academy should select Biotech Biology for their science course. For more info about the Biotech Academy, see below. Students who have already passed high school credit-bearing Biology in middle school may request another science course. HCC students who have completed both Algebra 1 and Geometry in middle school should sign up for Chem B/Chem C, Phys B/Chem B or AP Physics. Other HCC students who have completed HS Biology in MS and not Algebra 1 and Geometry, should sign up for AP Environmental Science, Oceanography, or Phys B/Chem B.

World Language

Taking at least two consecutive years of the same World Language is recommended for students planning on attending a 2 or 4-year college or university for admissions purposes. 9th graders are not required to take a World Language.

Instrumental Music

Concert Band: No audition required. Most freshmen will be in this class. Middle school band experience or instructor permission required.Symphonic Band: Audition required for incoming 9th grade students. Middle school band experience or instructor permission required.
Wind Ensemble: Audition required for incoming 9th grade students. Middle school band experience orinstructor permission required.
Jazz Band: Audition required. (This is an additional 7:45 a.m. before-school class. Concurrentenrollment in a large ensemble class will be required)
Percussion: Middle school band experience or audition. Contact Mr. Gillespie.
Concert Orchestra: No audition required.
Chamber Orchestra: Audition required for incoming 9th grade students.
Symphonic Orchestra: Audition required for incoming 9th grade students. Middle school orchestra or instructor permission required.

Choral Music

Treble Choir: Open to all students with upper voices (soprano/alto) in grades 9-12. No Audition required.
Chorale: Open to students in grades 10-12 with upper voices (soprano/alto) by audition.
Concert Choir: Open to lower tenor and bass voices in grades 9-12 (contact Ms. Rowley for voice placement). Open to upper soprano and alto voices in grades 10-12 by audition.

Digital Filmmaking

This program is for students interested in pursuing college or careers in film and television production, broadcast journalism, or advertising, as well as students with a general interest in motion picture production. Students interested in taking the course should sign up for Beginning Video which is a yearlong class.

Biotechnology Academy

Students interested in joining the Biotech Academy’s 9th grade cohort should select Biotech Biology as their science course IF they will be entering Geometry or higher as a 9th grader.

Maritime Pathway

Academy of Finance

Project Lead the Way
