Dear Ballard Families,

This is just a friendly reminder that your student can take a Covid test, for the remainder of this week at Ballard High School. Please print the consent form, sign, and give to your student. We also have hard copies of the consent forms available in the main office and Teen Health Center if you want your student to pick one up and bring it home.

If a student is 18 or older, then they can fill out the form and sign themselves. All students under 18 must get a parent or guardian’s signature. Students can get a pass from their teacher and bring their signed form to the Teen Health Center. Ms. Jani Lauvrak Lee, who is our BHS COVID Support person, will administer the test. Students will receive their test results, 15 minutes after they take their Covid test.

Dear Ballard High School Families,

On December 30, 2021, SPS sent out an email to all families that there would be no school for students on Monday, January 3, 2022.

Dr Williams

We wanted to make sure that you were aware that our BHS students can be tested on Monday, January 3rd at various SPS middle schools across Seattle. Please refer to the SPS COVID testing for students and FAQ information. In addition, we will have Covid tests available at BHS on Tuesday, January 4th (and ongoing) if you prefer your child to test at BHS. Covid testing is not mandatory, and students will be allowed to enter school without a test result.

Also, on Monday, grab and go meals will be available for our BHS students between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Our cafeteria staff will be handing out meals just inside the entry doors by the gymnasium. These grab and go meals are free for all BHS students.

Most of you may have seen or heard about the newest CDC guidance on quarantine/isolation. Please know that SPS will continue following the old quarantine guidance. Please note that there are differences according to whether or not your child is fully vaccinated.

Finally, please make sure that your child’s device is updated, signed in, etc. Refer to the SPS tech support and directions for Laptop/iPad set up, etc. We will continue to provide you with updates, as we receive new information. Thank you, again, for your flexibility and continued efforts to keep your family and others safe and healthy.

Happy New Year!

Good afternoon Ballard High School families,

Polo DeCano

I’d like to introduce you to Polo DeCano, a member of the central office Behavioral Health and Restorative Practices/Justice Teams, who is joining our support team at Ballard High School. Polo works for our district’s Coordinated School Health program, and is independent of my supervision.   His work will be to support our school response to students’ and community members’ requests for added structures around equity and advocacy.  In his role he will serve as Student Equity Advocate with direct access for our BHS students and families.   As a first step, his role at Ballard will be to connect and engage with various groups to listen to perspectives and recommendations that pertain to the culture and climate of the school, with a specific focus around race and equity.

Polo and I have had initial meetings and will continue to do so in an ongoing way to best ensure students’ needs are met and wellness is at the center of everyone’s experiences at Ballard. As Student Equity Advocate, he will be working with the administrative team and Ballard staff to bring matters needing attention and address ways to use restorative practices if harm has resulted. Please join me in welcoming Polo to this new role.  You may expect to hear directly from him as he develops his schedule to connect and engage with student and family/community groups.

Thank you for your commitment to the Ballard High School community and to our continued efforts to move forward and grow.

Dear Ballard High School Family,

Please allow me to introduce myself to you as the Acting Principal of Ballard High School, during the time that Mr. Keven Wynkoop will be on leave. I work with two other amazing school leaders, Ms. Guillory and Ms. Roesener, who also have school principal experience. So, I am humbled to be chosen for this interim leadership role. It has been a pleasure to serve Ballard High School for the past two years as assistant principal. I value the rich traditions and strong connections between our staff, students, and families. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support as I begin serving our school community in a different capacity.

For the past 26 years, I have been a school educator, and I bring to this position several years of experience as a high school principal and classroom teacher. My wife and I are also the proud parents of two children who attend SPS schools. Therefore, I am compelled to treat your children with the same high level of dignity and care that I would want my own children to receive at their school. I look forward to the opportunity to support students, staff, and families during this time of transition by effectively maintaining the daily operations of the school and providing stable and consistent leadership.

In the coming days, the number one priority for the Ballard High School leadership team is ensuring every child’s safety and well-being. Social distancing, mandatory masking, and the use of proper ventilation in all areas of the building will be key in continuing to keep the physical school environment safe during this pandemic. Also, we will look to learn what we can from the latest school tragedy that took place at a high school in Michigan and use that information over the coming weeks to determine what improvements we can make in security and response procedures at Ballard High School.

It is also our goal to ensure that each student has a voice and gets what they need to succeed in all their endeavors. We look forward to partnering with the school community to provide students with a rigorous and engaging curriculum and exciting learning experiences. Together, we can confidently move forward as a school by working as a team to enable our students to learn and achieve at their fullest potential. My door is always open, and I welcome your input.

Please feel free call to make an appointment to discuss your concerns, suggestions, or ideas. I can be reached at or by phone at 206.252.1000.
