The Principal of the Year Award is awarded annually during National School Principal Month to a school principal who has demonstrated a notable commitment to school libraries. Wynkoop was nominated for the award by TuesD Chambers, Ballard High School teacher librarian, because of his “unwavering commitment to literacy and the library.”

In the nomination, Chambers praised Wynkoop's recognition of the “changing landscape of learning” through his co-leading of an Instructional Innovation Cohort. The cohort, with the library, addressed the ways digital literacy can accelerate learning with strong pedagogy and reflective practice. Wynkoop has supported professional opportunities and hired a full-time assistant in addition to a full-time librarian. “He believes in a culture of ‘yes,’” says Chambers, and he “continues to make resources available in every way possible.” Brianna Hoffman, chair of the Awards Committee and WLA past president, stated, “the WLA Awards Committee is delighted to present this award to Mr. Wynkoop. His dedication to having a strong school library is a genuine asset to the students and staff of Ballard High School.”

Principal Wynkoop will be honored along side all 2018 WLA award winners during an awards luncheon on Fri., Oct. 19, in Yakima during the WLA Annual. Learn more about the Washington Library Association.
