Student Led Walk Out Planned. Not a School or District Sponsored Event
Monday, Nov 14, 2022
From SPS “Monday, Nov. 14, a student-led walkout is planned to protest gun violence. This is not a school or district-sponsored event. Students have a First Amendment right to assemble and express their opinions. However, the district does not allow for an excused absence for participation in a walkout unless prior approval from a student’s family is received.”
From Principal Hunt: “There is a student walkout planned for 9:50 a.m. on Monday morning related to gun violence prevention. The plans for this walkout have students proceeding to downtown Seattle and congregating at Seattle City Hall. I do want to note that while this is not a school or district-sponsored event, Ballard HS supports students exercising their rights to engage in political expression and civic engagement in a peaceful manner. Should you and your student decide that this is something that your student will take part in, I ask for your assistance with attendance. As Washington state law requires that we maintain accurate attendance records, communication about your student’s attendance is important.
To excuse your student’s absence, please have your student bring the Civic Engagement Activity Form to the BHS attendance office Monday morning before the walkout. I let students know about this form over the intercom on Thursday afternoon, stating that printed copies were available in the main office and attendance office. ~ Principal Abby Hunt
